A young ambitious lawyer, Jane, keen to fulfil her pro bono hours to get promoted, takes on a seemingly easy case of an old woman who is a multiple theft offender. Jane wins the case but her actions are challenged by a maverick social worker, Arif, who shows her that the full story is not just what is on the surface - even if Jane is not inclined to care.

Basking in the success of the previous theft case, Jane decides to help out on a case of an 8-year-old girl who has gone missing from the hospital after being treated for food poisoning. The trail leads to an illegal "Tent Village", as well as to the girl's father and older brother, who are homeless and often live on collecting freshly expired food.

On the back of Jane earning public recognition as the people's defender, she is approached by Lucas, a 13-year-old boy. Jane dismisses him, preferring to concentrate on the case at hand - Mr Hong, an old man who has been charged with breaking and entering. Even though Jane successfully defends Mr Hong, Arif continues to question her motives and values.

Jane is offered a job at Lee & Rashid, a private sector role she's always dreamed and one her father expects her to accept. Marcus a well-presented man seeks help, but Jane assumes he's taking advantage of the system. When Jane learns the truth about Marcus, and Arif shares stories about his disadvantaged past, she begins to realise just how fortunate she is.

Mr Lim, who runs an NGO, inherits a good class bungalow from Madam Tan an old woman who has just passed. Jane and Arif work to defend him against the Tan family who dispute the validity of will. David, Jane's father continues to pressure her to accept the job at Lee & Rashid. Mr Lim presents Jane and Arif with an old photo of Andrew and asks that they find him.

Through his social worker contacts, Arif tries to find out what has become of Andrew. At the columbarium, paying their respects to Madam Tan, Jane and Mr Lim see a mysterious woman leaving an offering. While Jane investigates further, the Tan family accuse her of misconduct. Jane is suspended from her job, putting the offer from Lee & Rashid in jeopardy.

Having been rejected by a less empathising Jane 3 months ago, Lucas and Ollie escape from their Aunty Karen's abusive household. The brothers live on the streets as they wait for their parents to return. With a deep-seated distrust for the authorities and Jane, the brothers escape further into the rabbit hole and meet the mysterious Drain Dwellers.

Lucas and Ollie's time with The Drain Dwellers is cut short when Arif gets the help of the police to search for them, inevitably leading to The Drain Dwellers' arrest as well. As the boys become re-acquainted with a now more compassionate Jane, their story becomes sensationalised in the news and Aunty Karen uses this chance to exploit the public for donations.
